Wenger: Re-signing Alexis not just about money

He believes it’s also about the club’s values

As rumors continue to swirl regarding Arsenal’s negotiations with Alexis Sánchez over a contract extension, Arsène Wenger has come out and said he believes getting Alexis to re-sign will be about more than just money, per The Guardian.

“Well, I would like to say the luxury of the modern game should be it’s not only about the money, because the players make anyway wherever they play good money at this level,” Wenger said.

“I believe personally, and maybe I am a bit naive, that it’s more about getting to meet the player’s needs. That’s more about the way the club has values, the way the club has ambition, the way the club respects the players.”

Wenger is nothing if not idealistic, so this is a pretty on brand statement, but given a recent report that Alexis wants wages in excess of £200,000 a week, it’s hard to say if there is any truth to this sentiment.

Given how fantastic Alexis has been as a striker for Arsenal this season, hopefully he comes to decide that the club’s wages, values, and whatever else matters to him are all to his liking.
