Arsenal are through to the knockouts as usual, but today will determine where they finish in the group - I won’t pretend to know all the permutations of how things could finish, but I do know - I think - that if Arsenal better PSG’s result, they win the group (If you’ve done the math, feel free to share your work).
Normally, winning the group is a much easier route to advancing deep into the knockouts, but this year, with the likes of Bayern and Real Madrid likely to finish second in their groups, group-stage winning isn’t the high-percentage thing it has been in previous years. That said, though, I’d love to see Arsenal win their group, just because winning things is fun.
When:
Tuesday, December 6, 2016
11.45AM PT/2.45PM ET/7.45 PM BT
Where:
St Jakob-Park, Basel
Importance:
Arsenal are coming off a 5-1 win at the weekend, and it’s fair to say they’re firing on all cylinders right now. If those cylinders fire better than they did against PSG a couple weeks ago, this game should be pretty straightforward; if not, it’ll be the usual white-knuckling in a big game that Arsenal tend to do.
Player News:
Olivier Giroud is probably available for this game? I think? Gabriel took a bit of a beating at the weekend and is questionable, though.
Probable starters:
Prepare for some heavy rotation, if The Sources are to be believed.
ospina; jenks, holding, gabriel, gibbs; elneny, maitland-niles; jeff, iwobi, perez; giroud
