It’s not transfer season, so that’s good news; there’s actual games to play/worry about/discuss etc, and actual league and Champions League news so yay. But, that said, positive contract news is always welcome, and today brings one bit of very, very positive contract news: Hector Bellerin has signed an extension with the club.
UPDATE 3.30PM PT: Apparently a contract hasn’t officially been signed yet, but Hector is close to doing so after “productive talks” last week.
I know people are anxious about Özil and Sanchez signing new deals, and with good reason, but this is also a great piece of business. Bellerin has played very well over the last year and a half, and he’s only 21, so locking him down for as long as realistically possible was and is a great move for the club.
He’s brought stability to a back line that has been good at the center but not as good on the wings, and he’s the kind of defender I love - not flashy, not headline-grabbing, but rock solid, good positionally, and a presence at the back that will hopefully be productive and solid for several more seasons.
