In the grand scheme of things, this was inevitable. Arsene Wenger has quite the successful history in securing the long-term futures of his talented, young players, and it's safe to say Hector Bellerin fits nicely in that description.
Therefore, it probably comes as little shock -- but very much welcomed news -- that Arsenal and the 20 year-old Spanish right back have come to an agreement on a contract extension. Much like prior agreements, Arsenal haven't made the terms of the deal public, but it's likely that it will be a very long time before either party needs to start worrying.
Wenger, on the heels of the announcement, had many things to say about Bellerin, but this quote stands out above them all:
"He’s a very serious, mature boy. I met him when he was 15... and I could see straight away that there was something special on the hunger side, on the desire and maturity side. He was a very mature boy very early.
That Bellerin went from the fringes of the squad before last season began, to regularly starting (and scoring meaningful goals, among many other fine moments) following Mathieu Debuchy's injury, when he was still 19 years-old, backs up this praise.
He's still raw in his overall game, and there will continue to be learning moments for him. But if anything was learned from his 2014/15 season, it's that Hector Bellerin's ready to challenge for, and obtain, the right back spot for years to come.
