Southampton and French international midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin -- some would even characterize him as a defensive midfielder -- is reportedly on his way to Manchester United after the clubs agreed to a £25 million transfer fee over the weekend. According to a BBC report late yesterday, Schneiderlin is undergoing a medical in advance of meeting his new teammates in Seattle for an American tour today or tomorrow. According to the Mirror, former Southampton defender and current ghost of his former self Luke Shaw was instrumental in persuading Schneiderlin to choose United over other potential suitors, including Arsenal.
Schneiderlin will ostensibly join another new transfer, former Bayern Munich star Bastian Schweinsteiger, in a double pivot which will lead to hilarious tongue-twisters in the commentary booth and consternation among whoever at United is responsible for putting player names on the backs of kits. The signing, if complete, will continue an active summer transfer window for United, who are remaking last year's fourth-place team with the inclusion of Memphis Depay and departures who may end up including, when all is said and done, David de Gea, Angel di Maria, and Robin van Persie.
UPDATE: Manchester United has officially announced the deal.
