Rumors of a Jackson Martinez move to Arsenal are officially dead, as he announced yesterday evening that he would instead be leaving Porto for Atletico Madrid. Considering Martinez isn't markedly better than any of the options Arsenal already has at striker, as far as I can tell, this does not surprise me, but since we told you about the earlier rumors, I feel a personal obligation to continue not ignoring this until its present conclusion.
The fee paid is allegedly €35 million (which is approximately £25 million, or more than double what we paid for Olivier Giroud a few years back), which appears to be a contract clause that Porto has decided to actually honor. Porto's president had said a few days back that Martinez had chosen to go to AC Milan for the same price, but I guess they got swerved there.
As far as Arsenal goes, no harm no foul. The central forward corps of Giroud, Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott, and maybe occasionally Alexis Sanchez is fine as it is, and probably only needs to be improved on if someone of Super Quality becomes available. Martinez could be that, but I'm not convinced at the moment. Other needs are more pressing. We move on.
