Having qualified out of Group F, here's the possible opponents Arsenal can take on in the first knockout stage.

Well, it wasn't the way most drew it up when we had the group draw back in August. Following the 3-0 win on the road against Olympiakos though, Arsenal are through to the Round of 16 in the 2015-16 UEFA Champions League.

As you are well aware, Arsenal finished second in its group behind Bayern Munich. Here are the other  group winners and runners-up who have qualified for the next round:

Group Winner Runner-Up
A Real Madrid Paris Saint-Germain
B Wolfsburg PSV Eindhoven
C Atlético Madrid Benfica
D Manchester City Juventus
E Barcelona Roma
F Bayern Munich Arsenal
G Chelsea Dynamo Kiev
H Zenit St. Petersburg Gent

For the Round of 16, winners are paired with runners-up, though they can't come from the same league or Champions League group. So for Arsenal, that rules out Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Chelsea, leaving five possible opponents in the next round:

  • Real Madrid
  • Wolfsburg
  • Atlético Madrid
  • Barcelona
  • Zenit St. Petersburg

That's a 60% chance we draw someone from La Liga which Arsenal have plenty of history with beyond the group stage. In the 2005-06 Champions League, Arsenal got past Real Madrid in the Round of 16 and familiar foe Villareal in the semifinals before losing to Barcelona in the championship match. Four years later, after dispatching Porto in the first knockout stage, Arsenal were seen off again by Barcelona. One year later, the Blaugrauna did away with Arsenal in the round of 16 (...........worst Robin van Persie yellow card ever).

Arsenal have not progressed out of the Round of 16 since 2009-10 cup.

For the quarterfinals, there are no restrictions on which teams can draw one another.
