POLL: Who should replace Vermaelen as Arsenal captain?

Which player deserves a mostly-meaningless symbolic honor that won't affect team play at all?

I'm pretty safely on record as not giving a damn who wears the armband, for any reason other than OCD or personal fandom of a player. But someone has to do it, and this is a thing that people seem to have opinions about, so let's settle it once and for all. After the poll's closed, I'll send it to Arsenal and they'll do whatever they've done with all the letters I've written asking Arsene Wenger to go to the zoo with me.

YOUR CONTENDERS:

Mikel Arteta

Probably the frontrunner, since he was vice-captain to Thomas Vermaelen and everyone who's played Football Manager knows that when your captain leaves, your vice-captain gets pissed if he's not made captain. Mikel Arteta wore the armband most of last year, since Vermalen wasn't good enough to actually play in games all that often, so he's pretty used to how it feels playing with a thing around your bicep. Also has the best hair on the team.

Per Mertesacker

Likely to play more this year than Arteta, especially if Arsenal brings in another midfielder of the holding variety. Per Mertesacker was the vice-vice-captain last year, meaning he was the fiat vice-captain since, again, Vermaelen was hardly ever actually on the field. He's a bit younger than Arteta, so he probably will be around longer. He's in charge of the kangaroo court as well, so he already knows how to tell people to do things. I'm told I look like Per, so I'm pulling for him so I can use that to build the case that I should be captain of my rec league team.

Jack Wilshere

I have no idea why, but there are people who think Jack Wilshere should be Arsenal captain. I have to assume it's because they're used to the captain not actually playing in any games. He's young, he's English, and he'll probably be around for a while if Juventus don't decide to try to buy him. Personally I wouldn't make the guy who won't listen to his manager's off-the-field instructions team captain, but as I said, I really don't give a shit who's captain. So if we want to have a bit of banter, Jack would be a great choice.

Aaron Ramsey

Has many of the same positives as Wilshere - young, British, probably going to play for Arsenal for years to come - but with the added benefit of actually being good. Aaron Ramsey's probably going to be captain someday, might as well quit dancing around it and do it.

Abou Diaby

My personal choice, mostly because it'd be the most hilarious one, and I honestly love Abou Diaby and want nice things for him. I'm also pretty sure the only person who's been at Arsenal longer is Arsene Wenger. One of these days, we're going to have a testimonial for Diaby and I'm going to cry.

SO! Who do you think should be the next Arsenal captain?
