Two Second Half Goals Sink Arsenal Ladies

The FA WSL winless streak continues.

Arsenal 0 - Birmingham City Ladies 2 (Linnette 49' 60')

Arsenal Starters: Byrne, Scott, Williamson, Stoney, Mitchell, Kinga, Ohno, Bailey, Ayisi, Smith, Carter

Subs Used: Yankey for Bailey 62', Murray for Kinga 73', Weir for Ayisi 18'

Unused Subs: Chamberlain, Fahey, Humphrey, Hoogendijk

With today's win Birmingham City, who Arsenal defeated in the FA Cup in what seems like ages ago, vaulted up to the top of the FA WSL with seven points from just three games. Arsenal went the opposite direction, sitting at the bottom of the FA WSL table for the second straight week. For those counting at home, the Gunners have one point from three games and zero wins.

The problem seems to be that Arsenal can't find the back of the net. In their three FA WSL games they've only scored one goal, and in their last three games in all competitions they haven't scored at all. Simply put, Danielle Carter hasn't stepped up to be a full time goal scorer quite yet, and there isn't really anyone else on the field that can help with that. Certainly there is Kelly Smith, but there is only an extent to what her greatness can do at this point in her career.

Shelly Kerr decided to add in Freda Ayisi into the starting lineup this week after several games of being subbed on in the second half. Ayisi has shown quite a bit of potential and a creative ability that could help find more chances on goal for the Gunners. However, that's still not putting an actual goal on the board.

Up next Arsenal has another chance to find that first FA WSL win as they take on Bristol Academy this Sunday, May 25th. Truth be told I would usually say Arsenal has a good chance to grab three points here, but nothing is certain at this point. What is certain is that we will have coverage of whatever the outcome there will be coverage right here on the Short Fuse.
