Arsenal put away a pretty poor Olympique Marseille side today by a final of 2-0 at the Emirates. The Gunners were not at their fizzy best, but they were pretty dang good at times. Marseille were not very good, although Florian Thauvin tried his best to make things interesting after coming on as a sub.
It took all of 32 seconds for Arsenal to get on the board, as Marseille's initial foray turned into a quick counter up the right, Sagna setting Jack Wilshere free. The midfielder strode towards goal, dinked around the desperate defender running back, and curled home at the far top corner with a great effort. It was one-nil.
Nothing much happened other than Arsenal dominance for a while, and then Aaron Ramsey won a penalty on the edge of the area 36 minutes in. Mesut Özil stepped up to take the spot kick, but his shot was pretty bad; Steve Mandanda helped by being way off his line, and the save was easy.
To his credit, Özil went on to have a terrific second half. While the officials kept getting routine offside calls wrong against Arsenal, Marseille appeared to have drank lots of milk during halftime. When a string of three great, sharp passes, the final from Özil, resulted in a Wilshere tap-in in the 66th minute, it was confirmation of Arsenal's dominance. Marseille tried to have a go after that, but other than a Thauvin shot that the excellent Nacho Monreal cleared off the line and another that Wojciech Szczesny saved well low at his near post, there was very little on. Arsenal won comfortably in the end, but they will have to wait until Match Day 6 to figure out how the group will shake out, as Dortmund won 3-1 at home against Napoli concurrently.
