Vermaelen Possibly Injures Himself, Not As Comically As Szczesny Did

The Belgian international, while training for games that don't matter to Belgium's fortunes, turns up with a leg injury and might join the list of resting Arsenal players during this Interlull.

Vermaelen might not be wearing the black, yellow and red this Interlull after all.

According to both Arseblog and a sketchy site, sometimes-Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen turned up with either an ankle or calf injury (depending on which source you believe), and this could keep him out of meaningless international action with Belgium -- already qualified for the World Cup, and scheduled for friendlies against Colombia tomorrow and Japan next Tuesday.

The injury news comes on the heels of yesterday's report of goalie Wojciech Sczcesny's sleep-induced ankle injury, and lingering illness news for Per Mertesacker and Mesut Özil that could keep the Germans out of similarly-meaningless international games against Italy and England.

While a number of Arsenal internationals are either qualified for the World Cup or have already been eliminated, three key first-teamers -- defenders Bacary Sagna and Laurent Koscielny and forward Olivier Giroud have been called up for France's Games That Matter against Ukraine, one of five home-and-away playoff series that will determine UEFA's last five World Cup 2014 entrants.
