Laurent Koscielny signs for Arsenal

It's official.  Laurent Koscielny, 6'1" French/Polish central defender, has completed his move to Arsenal today from Ligue 1 club Lorient for a reported 10.1 million pounds (according to the Guardian--the official website says "for an undisclosed fee").  Previously, he had played for Tours in Ligue 2, winning the French Player's player of the year award for that division.  He will wear the number 6 shirt previously worn by Philippe Senderos.

Arsène Wenger said upon completion of the signing that "Koscielny is a central defender with great ability who performed extremely well last season for Lorient. We identified him as a very strong centre half, who has made big progress very quickly. He has shown he is mentally strong, he's a fighter and a very strong competitor. Koscielny is a great addition to our squad."

Koscielny will most likely partner Thomas Vermaelen in the center of defense, although competition for that place with Johan Djourou could prove interesting and beneficial for both players.
