Arsenal World Cup open thread: Thursday, June 24

Groups E and F conclude today, with a number of Arsenal players in action.  First off, Group E at 10 AM EDT:

  • Denmark vs. Japan: Two teams who each have one win and one loss, fighting for second place behind the NetherlandsNicklas Bendtner looked good in Saturday's match against Cameroon, and he'll look to repeat his goal-scoring form here.
  • Cameroon vs. Netherlands: Alex Song squares off against his Arsenal teammate Robin van Persie in this clash between likely group winners and a team that has already been mathematically eliminated.

Then, at 2:30 EDT:

  • Slovakia vs. Italy: Slovakia needs a win to progress; Italy needs a win to not look silly, and also maybe to progress.
  • Paraguay vs. New Zealand: group leaders Paraguay can cement first place with a win, and even a draw may do it for them.  New Zealand, surprisingly, could qualify for the next round with a win.  A draw for them, though, means they need help from Slovakia to move on.
