I know a lot of you either don't know much about MLS or don't follow it much. I'm a huge fan of D.C. United, which is MLS' most decorated franchise. It's also my favorite domestic sports team. For the last few years, the threat has been hanging over our heads that the team could leave - RFK is falling apart and causes the team to spend millions more and take in millions less every year than any other team in the league.
Now, we've got the opportunity to get a permanent home in DC. It's a public/private partnership in which the estimated $150m construction costs will be borne by the team and the estimated $150 in land swaps and infrastructure (sidewalks, roads, water, power, etc - which would be required for any development of the site) will be provided by the District. This deal involves the creation of no new debt or taxes for the District of Columbia.
Not only that, but a stadium project in DC is estimated to bring $60-70 million in economic growth to the District, along with 400-500 construction jobs during the project, 300+ permanent jobs, and hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenues over the next three decades. It's a project that's good for the team and good for the District.
The team, in partnership with DC residents, local businesses, and labor unions, has launched a site where you can, in less than five minutes, sign up, email, tweet, and Facebook the DC Council and Mayor. In case you didn't see the link, here is another link to the site.
If you live in the District, it would be amazing if you could do this.
If you don't live in the District, it would still be great for you to sign a letter to the Council and send out some tweets about it through the site. The more noise about this, the better.
And if you happened to just send the link along to friends you know in the area, that would be incredible and I would be eternally grateful. Please help save my local team - a new state-of-the-art soccer stadium in our nation's capital could very well be the future site for an Arsenal tour stop! :) Thanks guys.
