Not Strictly Soccer Related: Unexpected Awesomeness

The lovely mrs. pdb and I spent the last week or so in Tucson, Arizona - she grew up there, and in a complete coincidence I have family that lives there, and the Timbers are doing spring training there, so we went down to kill...three birds with one stone, I guess. Four, if you count eating quantities of spectacular Mexican food that make me feel like Orson Welles right now and will see me hit the gym several extra times this week.

Anyway, when we got to the airport, the guy at the rental car counter said "Oh, you're going to rent a compact car? Tell you what. It's a really slow week this week, we've got lots of cancellations, so for an extra, probably, $5 a day I can put you in a really fun car". I said "what do you mean by "fun car?" " He pointed at the Mustang convertible behind me and said "something like that". After he ran the numbers and confirmed that the grand total of our rental would be less than $200 for a seven day rental, he said "okay, now, which one do you want?" He went around and showed us the Mustang, a Chrysler 300 convertible, a BMW 325is hardtop, and then we rounded the corner and saw the black Camaro convertible. We both instantly said WE WANT THAT ONE.

So for about $30 more than renting a stupid Dodge Neon, we got a V6, rear-wheel-drive, low-to-the-ground, badass 2012 Camaro convertible. I'm not much of a car guy - that may be the biggest car I've ever driven in my life - but OH MY GOD WAS THAT AWESOME. We got random people complimenting us as they crossed the street when we were stopped at red lights; we got people asking if they could take it for a drive, and we generally just spent the week driving around, blasting classic rock on the radio, and feeling all sorts of awesome. There is nothing like driving a muscle car - even a modern one - with the top down and the sun out and Stranglehold on the radio. And yes, that happened.

All of this almost mitigates the fact that I watched Mikael Silvestre pretty much play his way on to the 2013 Portland Timbers roster. Yes, really.

What about you? Anything unexpectedly awesome happen to you recently? Anything else exciting happening? Pitchers and catchers report next week, which in and of itself isn't anything, but like the first returning birds of the spring, it's a sign of something good about to happen.
