According to the official Arsenal site, Andre Santos, Arsenal's now-third-choice left back, has gone on loan to Brazilian club Gremio. The site paints this as a matter of Santos wanting more first-team football, which he certainly is right to:
After finding opportunities limited this term, Santos now returns to Brazil’s Serie A - the Brasileirao - for more regular first-team football.
And we here at The Short Fuse certainly wish him well in his quest to regain some form. He's become a bit of a scapegoat lately for some of Arsenal's troubles in January, and while his play has absolutely been poor, he's not as bad a player as his recent form indicates. He's not Philipp Lahm, either, to be sure, but.
The question now for Arsenal is what to do vs. Bayern Munich in eight days. With Santos gone and Kieran Gibbs hurt and Nacho Monreal cup-tied, there is one viable first-team option at left back: Thomas Vermaelen. If he can be healthy in time, and Laurent Koscielny can be healthy, Arsenal can assemble a somewhat okay back four. Otherwise, things could get interesting with Carl Jenkinson coming into the side, or Ignasi Miquel. More on that as it draws nearer.
